Overview

Follow a knowledgeable local guide on a stroll around the fascinating town of Qaqortoq, learning about its Greenlandic history, sacred churches, the Stone & Man outdoor art project, and enjoying free time at Qaqortoq Museum. Your 1.5-hour adventure begins on foot as you head out on a trip around the most populous town in Southern Greenland. Its early beginnings date back 4,300 years and you'll admire its colorful colonial homes and bustling fish and meat markets of today. Learn about its educational prowess and view Mindebronden, the oldest fountain in Greenland. Among its old and new churches you'll encounter a 1930s organ and a ship-inspired ceiling motif. Along the way you can't miss the Stone & Man open-air art installation. In the 1990s local artist Aka Hoegh teamed up with other Nordic creatives to create a collection of some 40 sculptures that are intricately carved into rock faces stippled around town. The guided portion of your journey ends in front of Qaqortoq Museum, where you can take some free time to explore as you wish before returning independently to the ship (additional cost may apply). In this old blacksmith shop you'll discover Norsemen history depicted through photographs, kayaks, a replicated peat hut, traditional harpoons and blubber bags.
